Continuing our series of historical markers – this marker is a tribute to the Incorporation of the Village of Boyne and is located at the entrance of City Hall.
The area was first settled in 1856 by the families of John Dixon and John Miller. The settlement was named Boyne, as it was near the Boyne River, which was named after a river in Ireland. In September 29, 1869, a post office opened and John Miller was the first postmaster. Others moved to the area and the charter election for the Incorporation of the Village of Boyne was held on Monday, April 20, 1885. One of the first ordinances approved by the first council stated that “cattle must not be allowed to run at large in the village between 7:30 pm and 6:00 am.”
At the time of the election the population of the village stood around four hundred and many dwellings existed in the now current business district.
