Continuing our series of historical markers – this marker is a tribute to the “Boyne City Carnegie Library.” The first public library in Boyne City was housed in the high school and donated by the Monday Study Club, which is still an active organization.

As the population grew, the school became overcrowded and in 1916 the school superintendent H. W. McIntosh, contacted the Carnegie Corporation about funds for a public library building. The Carnegie Corporation generously donated $15,000 for the project. In the spring of 1918, the library was finally opened in its current location at the corner of Park and Main. The total cost for construction and furnishings was $17,953.08.

The library faced a significant setback in 1961 when a new high school opened. The library’s shelves were stripped of books and the facility closed. It appeared that the Boyne City Public Library might be lost forever. However, a group of determined citizens successfully embarked on a mission to revive the library.

Today the Boyne City Library stands proud as a testament to the community’s commitment to education, culture and public service.

Boyne City Main Street would like to thank the library and its staff for their outstanding dedication to our community. Their commitment to providing resources, helping with Community Kickoff, offering children’s programs and the book mobile for the farmers market makes a positive impact every day. We appreciate all you do!
