Continuing our series on historical markers – this marker is a tribute to the Stackus Furniture Store & Funeral Home and is located at 309 South Lake Street.

Did you know that one of the oldest family-run businesses in Boyne City started as a cabinet shop? James B. Stackus, a Civil War veteran, opened his business in 1875. Since cabinet makers often crafted caskets, his services quickly became essential to the growing community.

By 1895, his son expanded the business into the town’s first “undertaking parlor.” S.B. Stackus later became one of Michigan’s first 100 licensed mortuary science practitioners! The funeral home moved to Elm Street in 1912, and the furniture store operated until 1920.

A fascinating piece of local history that shaped the community!
