Continuing our series on historical markers – this marker is a tribute to the New Boyne Hotel and is located in the alleyway between en vogue salon and For Fun’s Sake on Water Street.

On May 1, 1907, Frank Meyers became the proprietor of the newly remodeled New Boyne Hotel.

Travelers could find comfort in the 52 room establishment for just two dollars a day. Each room was bright, airy, and well-furnished, and guests enjoyed exceptional cuisine and attentive service. The hotel offered all the modern conveniences of its time, including, electric lighting and a bathroom.

Tragically, on March 7, 1910, during a severe blizzard, the New Boyne was destroyed by fire. Despite the best efforts of the Boyne City Fire Department, the building could not be saved. The intense cold caused water from the firefighting efforts to freeze, forming a thick layer of ice over the ruins.

In time, the debris was cleared away, and Joseph McNamee built a grocery and clothing store on the site where the New Boyne once stood.
